Home from Home

By Fiona Stocker.

It’s cosy at Inside Home and Gifts, and that’s the way owner Amanda Gutwein likes it. Everything from the beautiful old brick walls to the soft woolen fabrics gracing the shelves, gives off an air of comfort. ‘This is my home from home,’ Amanda laughs. ‘I love that this is a beautiful place to come.’

A warm welcome is a big part of the shop’s feel, with the café right next door adding to the bonhomie. This is a shopping experience to relax into. ‘Nobody’s in a rush here,’ Amanda agrees. Come in through the doors and you’re in a different world – signaled by the beautiful scents and presence of candles, skincare and other gifts, homewares and clothing.

For Amanda, winter is the time to shop in Tasmania. Inside, like shops everywhere, has winter sales on. ‘But we’re still cold here!’ she laughs. So customers get to wear their silky soft knits for a few more weeks, and the shop’s youngest customers can still be dressed up cute and cosy in the store’s babywear.

Hand crafted products from Tasmania sit alongside sustainable and ethically sourced ranges from further afield, making for an enticing mix of goodies on the shelves. Well-known names such as Elk nestle beside woolen beanies crocheted specially for the store by a local maker, and bespoke ranges such as Embalm Skincare, made by a Tasmanian woman, proudly organic and vegan.

The care the store’s team takes over every one of their ten thousand plus items of stock is mirrored in their way with customers. With some staff there since Inside Home and Gifts opened in 2012, regulars are like long-standing friends. No request is too much trouble, and the woman who wanted a fruity smell to remind her daughter of summer left with a candle and the aroma of coconut, giftwrapped.

Visitors often ask where they can find branches on the mainland, not realizing that Inside is, like much of its stock, unique. For lucky Tasmanians, the store’s hours are the same come winter, summer and spring. ‘We want our customers to know we’re here whatever the season,’ says Amanda.
